This collection consists of Putnam's research notes and preliminary drafts. The volume was not completed before Hewes died and Putnam abondoned the project. Much of the information in this collection is included in Putnam's biography of Hewes in the Hewes genealogy. There is also some correspondence from Putnam to Hewes, copies of the illustrations for the book, copies of Hewes' early correspondence from Yale and California, and a few Hewes mementos.
